Leadership perspective - Style 13 / 21

Style theory is concerned with the style that leaders use when interacting with others.

Distributive leadership is concerned with spreading the leadership role with others in a team.

Leadership style theories explain that a successful leader will have a style or behaviour.

Kurt Lewin has identified three main styles of leadership:

  1. Autocratic / Authoritarian - The leader imposes their will and says ‘Do this’.

  2. Democratic / Participative - The leader has an open discussion with the group and says ‘Let’s solve this together’.

  3. Free rein / Delegative / Laissez-Faire - The leader lets the group make decisions and says ‘You sort this out’.
